What Is a Pegboard? Introducing an Item That Helps You Make the Most of Wall Space

In retail stores, corporate offices, and similar locations, walls often end up as dead space. If you want to maximize the use of your limited space, we recommend preparing an item known as a pegboard. However, for those who hear “pegboard,” it may be difficult to imagine what kind of item it really is.

Here, we will introduce the uses of pegboards, how to choose one, and also how to select the hooks that you should prepare together with them.

Table of Contents

1. What is a Pegboard?

As its name suggests, a pegboard is a board with numerous holes perforated at regular intervals. The spacing between the holes is available in different types, such as 25mm or 30mm.

Pegboards are used in a variety of places, but recently they have become popular among DIY enthusiasts as interior décor items, and they are also increasingly used in stores as display fixtures for products.

2. Uses of Pegboards

Unlike ordinary boards, pegboards are characterized by their evenly spaced holes. Thanks to these holes, they can be used in many ways. Here are some examples:

2.1 Using as Storage Space

One of the key features of pegboards is their evenly spaced holes. By attaching hooks to these holes, you can easily create storage space. By increasing the usable wall space, pegboards help reduce dead space in stores and other locations.

Another advantage is that, unlike ordinary boards, you don’t need to drill your own holes for hooks. Compact pegboards are especially useful for DIY purposes at home, such as adding storage space to a kitchen.

2.2 As a Partition

Pegboards can also be recommended as partitions in offices or stores. By attaching legs, they can be easily set up on the floor, allowing you to divide spaces simply. While dividing a space, you can also attach hooks to create additional storage.

3. Key Points When Choosing a Pegboard

Pegboards are available in many variations with different board sizes, hole diameters, and spacing. It is important to choose the right board based on your intended use and installation location. Here are two points to check when selecting pegboards for stores or offices:

3.1 Check the Load Capacity

If you want to use a pegboard for storage, checking the load capacity is crucial. A pegboard with low load capacity may break or drop items if heavy objects are placed on it.

For hanging heavier items, choose a thicker, sturdier pegboard with high load capacity. Increasing the number of fasteners used to attach the pegboard can also help improve its strength.

However, thicker boards are also heavier. If hanging on a wall, consider whether there is a secure way to fix the board to prevent it from falling.

3.2 Hole Diameter and Spacing

The hole diameter refers to the width of each hole in the pegboard. Since there are several types, you should choose according to the parts or hooks you want to use. A 5mm diameter is common, but 6mm and 8mm boards are also available.

If you plan to use hooks that span two or more holes, you also need to check the hole spacing (pitch). Some hooks may not fit if the spacing differs. Spacing types include 25mm and 30mm, so make sure to match them with your intended hooks.

4. How to Install a Pegboard

Pegboards can be leaned against a wall or hung on it.

If you want to attach a pegboard to a wall, you must leave a small gap between the wall and the board. This is because, once installed, the ends of hooks and fasteners may stick out at the back.

For small and lightweight pegboards, you can use long pushpins. For heavier boards, use multiple specialized fasteners or screws to ensure stability and prevent falling.

If you do not want to drill holes in your wall, we recommend installing columns (like tension rods) and attaching the pegboard to them.

5. Prepare Storage Parts Together with Your Pegboard

If you want to use a pegboard as wall storage, you must also prepare the hooks to attach to it. Hooks can generally be divided into three types:

  • Hanging type (for hooking items)
  • Shelf type (for placing items on top)
  • Basket type (for placing items inside)

Be aware that once you place or hang something on one area, you can no longer install another hook in that space. For example, if you use a hanging hook, the space directly below it will be occupied.

Plan your hook layout according to what items you want to store.

If a hook requires two or more holes, it may not work unless the pegboard’s pitch matches the hook width. Always make sure hooks are compatible with the pegboard’s pitch.

Also, to prevent items from falling or leaving unusable holes, make sure to install the pegboard level.

6. Pegboards That Can Be Used in a Variety of Ways

Pegboards are versatile items that can increase wall storage when used with hooks or even help with soundproofing a space. When used as large partitions, pegboards can create a quiet and focused environment.

If you plan to use pegboards for storage, hook selection is also an important point. Consider what items you want to store and prepare hooks that match the hole diameter and spacing.

Take advantage of the wide range of uses that pegboards offer—you may find them surprisingly helpful in both professional and personal spaces.
